Well, the BOF Video Luau, as we have dubbed
it officially featured a little more Southern Style Drive-In
smega and dammit I am stating right here and now...Lee Frost
and Wes Bishop were just about the best damn two some in filmmaking
during the late 60's early 70's. You talk about underated...The
Black Gestapo, Nazi Camp 7, The Thing With Two Heads, this little
jewel and a slew of others have got me ready to do a whole show
about these 2, who not only write together, but one produces,
one directs and both act in these sick slices of filmdom.
You can bet you'll be entertained by God, they is alright by
me and so is Dixie Dynamite.
We
got native Kentuckian Warren Oates, better know to you stiffs
as the Drill Sgt. in Stripes but he was a contemporary of Jack
Nicholson, Marty Sheen and Steve McQueen, among others and by
the way, Steve is in this movie, uncredited and totally unseen
as a motorcycle racer during a motocross scene with Warren.
But I digress, Warren Oates was a marvelous acting dude (catch
the documentary on his life by fellow Kentuckian Tom Thurman)
who unfortunately had a battle with the bottle and in this thing
Ol' Dubya is drunk in most scenes and not even in some others
because he probably was too drunk. But the beauty of it all
is the writers just wrote around it so do not worry, it is the
South, folks drink hard, they live hard and sure enough it works.
Character actor extraordinaire Christopher George is also in
this puppy and gives us the other recognizable face.
The plot goes
something like this:
Daddy runs moonshine,
bungling deputy (played fantastically by Wes Bishop--producer/co-writer)
fires a gun during a car chase, Daddy wrecks, dies...Dixie and
her sis Patsy gots to pay off the farm and of course, reek vengeful,
vengeance and get revenge.
Along the way we see:
Warren, ride a motorcycle, Warren drink a beer,
Warren teaches both gals to ride a motorcycle, drink some more
beer,
Warren races his motorcycle and wins, celebrates with a few
beers,
leaves town and comes back to have a beer.
Now I know you are saying "uh, is this
good?" Yes, this thing has some good stuff, a bumbling
sheriff, who seems to be the inspiration for the sheriff Roscoe
P. Coltrane character on the Dukes of Hazard, as well as the
town's bad guy who, likewise bares an incredible resemblance
to Boss Hogg. All
in all it is entertaining but lacks any nudity or much grit...there
is some implied rape, an exploding shitter and a morgue-robbing
but this thing, as you can see by the one sheet, was Rated PG,
PG dammit, from a couple of guys who were wallowing in drive-in
gravel, it is hard to believe that they cut back on a bunch
of Dixie TaTas, but they did for some reason. But, you will
still like this. I promise. It has Steve McQueen, he was a fucking
genius this Steve McQueen, Bullitt, Ali McGraw...Steve McQueen
completists, oh man, start the jerk-a-thon. Oh yeah, Dixie,
she is cute, too, Jane Ann Johnstone has great gams...get this
and you can even watch it with the kids, just tell them "Warren
likes his soda-pop" or "that's just Warren's medicine,"
or "Warren has a problem, kids, but he is a genius."
Lee
Frost, Wes Bishop...I love these guys! Don't worry we will tell
you more about them in the future.
