ITEM! BRAINS ON FILM IS ON THE AIR!
Well, we’re finally up and runnin’ on this thing, and I’m just
happy to be a part of it. As you read this jungle/swamp night
is streaming like a motherfucker all over the planet. A little
backstory may be in order. The original brains on film that ran
on public access here in sexy lexy stopped broadcasting just after
I moved here from the hills of eastern KY, but I always heard
whispered praise from local drunks and scenesters about how funny
or offensive or stupid it was, and since the word boring was never
mentioned I figured something interesting might have been going
on. Now I was raised on a steady diet of Famous Monsters
magazine and Chiller Theater out of Huntington WV (My dogpatch-esque
hood being way too rural to actually have local stations) so exploitation
movies were already a love of mine, and then I was introduced
to brother george as “The only person I’ve ever met who is a bigger
pro wrestling fan than you”. From then on we were stuck together
as pals, like it or not. Through George I met Professor Tread
who also shared an obsession for all things tawdry. Then for about
8 years we were all blind drunk at a local bar called the Wrocklage,
playing in various loud, sloppy, loud and loud rock bands and
in general being blind fucking drunk. Somewhere along the way
I got slipped a few dubs of BOF and my flabber was gasted at how
good it was. Compared to most real tv shows it was great. Compared
to the public access stuff I had seen it was amazing. It was the
kind of thing I wish I could have been involved then, and now
I am. Oh, things have changed since the original show. Movies
that were reviewed back then that seemed out of reach and mysterious
are easily seen now. Tim Burton did an Ed Wood Biopic. Mars
Needs Women is being shown 3 times a day on cable. You can
get Santo vs the Vampire Women and They Saved Hitler’s
Brain on DVD. And of course there was MST3K for 10 years.
Thankfully the well of weird flicks is a deep one indeed, and
we’ll keep dipping our bucket into it. Hopefully some of you all
will stick around to watch what we do, but as I said, I’m just
happy to be a part of it.
